Stories on Display

The Thomas gallery provides expanded, museum-quality space to display rare materials. Some of the highlights include a letter from a young Barack Obama to filmmaker Henry Hampton and a university blue book featuring an early poem by Tennessee Williams. Unlike museums, these special collections are accessible for public use, intending to inspire students to engage directly with primary sources in their studies and research.

On May 1, 2018, WashU Libraries opened a permanent exhibit titled A Declaration, featuring a rare broadside printing of the Declaration of Independence by Solomon Southwick of Newport, Rhode Island. The display has a digital touchscreen replica with interactive features that let visitors explore details of the document. WashU hopes this exhibit will inspire students, educators, and visitors to engage more deeply with early American history, and has provided additional resources on the Declaration, the founding fathers, and the American Revolution.

The Newman Exploration Center is a lively and engaging space that highlights WashU’s diverse international initiatives led by students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
Throughout the year, the center organizes a wide range of events aimed at encouraging exploration, engagement, and hands-on learning through travel. It also offers resources on domestic and international study, research, travel, and cultural experiences, supporting members of the campus community in creating their own intellectual and physical journeys.
